Following Anderson Cooper’s less than shocking coming out last week, the talking heads seem to still be trying to make sense of it. In an email to friend and blogger Andrew Sullivan last week Cooper discreetly said, “The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.” This comes of no surprise however because anyone who keeps up on the media circuits and pop culture blogs are at least aware of the “rumors.” Still, everyone wants to know why now, and why so quietly?
Now I have always said, that coming out is a personal thing, and should be done however the person coming out sees fit. Saying that, I also believe that all closeted queer people are absolutely on the wrong side of history right now. As queer people you should be able to see what is going on in the world today, and want to have the chance to tell your children the part you played in equality for all humans! I still say congrats Anderson, I mean no disrespect when I say that he did it in a true “old money” kind of way. He knew that we knew…why shout it from the roof tops? Going through all of that for a “meh” response from the listeners would have been terribly anti-climactic.
